Have you seen the movie “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days?” It’s a rom-com about a young, ambitious writer at a women’s magazine who is tasked with writing an article in which she proves she can snag a boyfriend, then drive him away in 10 days.
The boyfriend this writer snags is an ad exec who, in the course of the film, has to come up with a campaign for a jewelry company. The winning pitch? Frost Yourself. Yes: he posits that jewelry is like frosting on a cake. So if someone wears jewelry, they’re frosting themselves—and since women are powerful and capable all on their own, they should buy themselves jewelry.
If you’ve worked with us at all, you know that we know a thing or two about powerful, capable women (#womeninconstruction #generalcontractor). And we know a thing or two about jewelry—and that includes the kind that makes your kitchen shine. Yes, we’re talking backsplashes.
In case you don’t know, a backsplash is that expanse of space between a countertop and the cabinet above it. That space is covered with tile or another waterproof material. The function of a backsplash is to protect the wall from water—which is why you only find backsplashes in kitchens and bathrooms.
Just because something is functional, however, doesn’t mean it has to be boring. In fact, a backsplash can be the perfect vehicle for bling—if that’s your style, anyway. And let’s face it: we all have a jewelry style. Some styles are just more subtle than others.
Think of it this way: stoves and other appliances don’t usually offer much in the way of color or design choice. Neither do cabinets, at least not without great expense. But a backsplash can be virtually any color. And the choice of design—well, let’s just say there’s one out there for everyone. And if there isn’t, there can be (especially when you work with someone who is both a general contractor and designer. Just saying).
So….what do you want, bling-wise? Do you want to think about the gorgeous architecture you pined for on your trip to Italy every time you make spaghetti? Opt for antique, patterned tiles. Want to feel like you’re near the ocean even if you’re in Kansas? Glass tiles in gorgeous shades of blue and green can make that happen. Want a calm oasis amid the chaos of life? Think about grey or simple white tiles and super clean lines.
The point is this: when it comes to the details that transform your space from a house to a home, no detail is too small. Sure, a backsplash needs to do what it’s intended to do, and it should be easy to clean. But don’t forget that a backsplash is a perfect place to show off your personal aesthetic—and a perfect opportunity to make your space a space you love.
